My nail varnish collection - the pink's

I recently decided to check through all of my nail varnishes to see what colours I already have. I often lust after new nail varnishes but I'm usually never quite sure if I already have one that is pretty much exactly the same shade. So to make it easier to see the shades I have at a glance I’ve made a colour wheel for each colour.

As I’m doing this I thought I might as well do a series of posts showing the nail varnishes and shades I have in my collection.

Nails Inc - Curtain Street

Curtain Street is one of a few matte shades that Nails Inc released a couple of years ago. I don’t believe these were very popular as I picked this up when it was on sale and there’s only one shade still available on the website. The problem with this is that you can’t apply a top coat over the top because it would then no longer be matte and because of this it lasts no time at all. I now have a matte top coat which means I can make any shade I own matte, so I think I’ll probably be getting rid of this one.

Seche - Precious

This came in one of my Glossyboxes a few months ago. I actually received a really dark shade and arranged to do a swap with another subscriber through the Facebook group for a lighter shade. However, I’m really not keen on this shade and have never actually used it so I think I’ll also be getting rid of this one as well.

L’Oreal - Acid Watermelon

As you’re probably aware this one is a recent release and as soon as I saw it appearing on posts I knew I wanted to give it a try. I kept looking at it in one of my local Boots stores but I was slightly concerned that even though there was a couple of rows of the same shade the colours in the bottles actually appeared slightly different. These were directly under some quite warm lights on the display so I wondered whether maybe this was affecting the formula (I don’t know if this is something that might happen?). In the end I picked this up as part of the buy 1 get 1 free offer. I gave it a try and was really quite disappointed with it. It didn’t appear to apply very well, maybe because it’s a pastel type shade, and I just didn’t really get on with. However, after painting it on the wheel I really like how it’s turned out so I will give it another go.

Nails Inc - Notting Hill Gate

This is a mini size varnish that came in one of my Glossyboxes. I was actually really pleased to receive this because I’d had my eye on it for a while. This is a neon pink shade, but not as neon as Models Own's new Ice Neons. I quite like the mini size Nails Inc varnishes because they’re cheaper so you can try out a new shade without splashing out too much. Also to be honest, unless I love a shade I never finish a bottle of varnish before it goes off or I get bored of it!

Illamasqua - Obsess

This was my first Illamasqua nail varnish and I picked this one up in their January sale for just a fiver. This is a fabulous bright fuchsia pink and is amazing quality and I now have a bit of an obsession with Illamasqua’s nail varnishes!

Illamasqua - Ouija

Ouija is one of Illamqsqua’s newest shades and is part of the Paranormal collection.  This is a beautiful shimmery pink shade which is one of my favourites across my whole collection.  I posted about this shade here

Bad Apple - Barn

This was one of three nail varnishes I received in a goody bag when I attended a gala performance of The Lady Boys of Bangkok.  Barn is a deep pink which contains shimmer.  I posted about the Bad Apple nail varnishes I received here.

Models Own - Blooming Pink

I picked this up at the Clothes Show Live as part of a goody bag which I believe cost £10 and included your choice of two nail varnishes and various other makeup items.  This was really good value considering how much came in the goody bag and that the nail varnishes are £5 each.  This shade is actually very similar to Barn but is a slightly deeper pink.

Models Own - Magenta Devine

This was the other shade I picked up in the Clothes Show goody bag.  This has come out quite purple on the photos but this is definitely a dark pink shade.  I love this colour but wouldn’t wear it on it’s own as it would take too many coats to completely cover the nail so it’s best worn over the top of another colour.  I applied three coats to the nail wheel and you can still see through to the plastic in some areas.

No7 - Jammy

This came in the goody bag I won from the #bootscamp Twitter party (you can find further details about the #bootscamp Twitter party here).  I haven’t actually used this yet but it’s a very pretty pink that's similar to Barn and Blooming Pink and actually really does remind me of the jam in Jammy Dodgers!

Models Own - Bubblegum

This is the newest addition to my nail varnish collection which I posted about a couple of days ago.  This really is a neon bubblegum pink shade that is much more neon than the photos show.

So those are the pink nail varnishes in my collection.

Models Own Ice Neon's - Bubblegum & Pink Punch

When Models Own released their new Ice Neon's collection a couple of months ago I really liked the look of them.  I haven't really tried a Models Own nail varnish before and I also haven't tried a neon nail varnish.  Knowing how reasonably priced Models Own nail varnishes are I thought I would give a couple a try.  Lois Lemon and Toxic Apple are not really my kind of shades, I'm much more into reds, pinks and purples when it come to nail varnish, so my options were Pukka Purple, Pink Punch and Bubblegum.

I decided I wanted a pink colour so I headed to Boots and found I couldn't decide between Pink Punch and Bubblegum.  After standing there for about 5 minutes I finally decided to go for the one with pink in the name, however when I got this home and tried it on I thought that this was more of an orange than a pink colour.  So on another trip to Boots I also picked up Bubblegum.

The swatches on the Models Own website show Bubblegum as a bright barbie type pink and Pink Punch as a deeper more red type pink.  I personally think that Bubblegum is closer to the swatch used for Pink Punch and as I've said, that Pink Punch is more of an orange type colour.  I do like both colours, but out of the two Bubblegum is my personal favourite.

I found that as you apply these they start to dry quite quickly, so you need to try and cover the nail as quickly as possible or it can go kind of blotchy.  I don't know whether this may be something to do with how hot and humid it is at the moment, I may try keeping these in the fridge to see if this helps at all.  Models Own do recommend that you keep these in the fridge to stop the colour from fading, but this might be more to do with the 'ice' branding than a necessity for prolonging the fluorescence.

You can get a good coverage with just one coat but I apply two just to make sure it's perfect!  As it states on the lids these have a matte effect, but to make them glossy you just add a top coat.  Despite how quickly these start to dry while you're applying them I find they actually take quite a while to become fully dry and if you start using your hands too quickly you'll be left with smudges, dents and imprints.  However, I just apply Seche Vite over the top which gives them a fantastically glossy finish and then they're also fully dry in no time at all.

Overall, I love these!  They're very reasonably priced, easy to apply and are super neon, which is perfect for summer. Unfortunately my pictures don't show just how neon these actually are.  I also really like the frosted bottles which look a little bit different and stand out in my nail varnish collection.

Models Own Ice Neon nail varnishes are £5 each.

Revlon Beauty Booth - Week 6

Week 6 of Revlon's Beauty Booth has now been released.  This week's tutorial features a magical Cinderella look and the product from the look that you can win is Revlon's Photoready BB Cream Skin Perfector, which features broad spectrum SPF 30.
I'm not personally a fan of BB creams but I do like that this contains SPF 30.  If I was lucky enough to win one I would probably use this as a base to go under a light coverage foundation, which I think would be perfect for the sort of weather we're currently experiencing.

MAC Lipstick - Lickable

About a month ago I posted about my first MAC lipstick, which I treated myself to for my birthday (post here).  I received a little bit of birthday money from my in-laws so I thought I’d push the boat out and treat myself to another MAC lipstick that I’ve had my eye on for a while, which was Lickable.

Lickable comes in a cremesheen finish, which is very similar to the amplified creme finish (amplified creme's are creamy, pigmented and glossy) but cremesheen is not quite as pigmented and also not quite as glossy.  Although this is not as pigmented as an amplified creme it still has some pretty good pigmentation to it!  MAC describe this shade as a bright clean blue pink, which I would say is pretty accurate.

I'm not as keen on this shade, Impassioned would be my favourite out of the two, but I do still really like it.  This one does cling to dry patches slightly, but using a lip scrub beforehand can sort this out.  This lasts about the same as Impassioned, around 2-3 hours, but also leaves behind a stain that means you can get away with leaving it a bit longer before you have to reapply.

Overall I'm really pleased with with my first two MAC lipsticks and am definitely lusting after some more shades, it's just a shame they've now put them up to £15 each.  I just managed to get both of mine at £14 before that sneaky little price increase crept in while they thought nobody was looking!

Bourjois Laser Toppings - Aqua Purple & Blue Neon

I recently posted to show you some Bourjois products I picked up on 3 for 2 in Boots.  Two of these products were Bourjois' new Laser Toppings in Aqua Purple and Blue Neon.

Laser Topping consist of a clear varnish containing strips of glitter that Bourjois refer to as light reflecting fibres.  Aqua Purple contains pink and purple fibres and Blue Neon contains purple and blue fibres.  This also comes in the shade Sun Scales, which I believe is a gold colour.

I tried this over a black nail varnish and a white nail varnish and I think they both look pretty good.  Doing the white was a bit of a pain though as I don't actually have a white nail varnish so I had to use a tip whitener which had a really thin brush!  You could wear this over a similar shade of nail varnish however it's easier to see when there's a contrast between the toppings and the nail shade.

The fibres leave a slightly rough finish on your nails so you may want to apply a top coat over the top to make a smoother surface.  A top coat will also help seal these down to your nails and stop you being tempted to pick them off (if you're anything like me!).  When you apply the Laser Toppings you also need to keep an eye on any fibres that are left hanging over the edge of your nail (which you can just see on the picture above) and either push these back onto the nail or pull them off as these will be scratchy once they've dried in place and obviously slightly annoying as well!

These aren't as difficult to remove as glitter because you aren't left with a full coverage but they are still a bit of a pain to remove.  I wouldn't recommend using a dip in remover as the fibres will just get left behind in the pot.

Overall I'm really pleased with these and think they create an interesting look.

Bourjois Laser Toppings cost £5.99 each.

Glossybox July 2013 - Seaside Splash

I actually cancelled my Glossybox subscription a few months ago for a couple of reasons, the main one being that at the moment I can’t really afford to keep it up.  Also I find the boxes a bit hit and miss and it’s really disappointing when you open your new box and discover you’re not very keen on at least a couple of the products included.  But this is the nature of a surprise beauty box.

I have however been keeping an eye on the contents of each month’s box and hadn’t ruled out treating myself to one if it looked like a good one.  As soon as I saw that July’s box featured a special seaside design I knew I wanted it just for the box alone!  I kept an eye out for blog posts showing the contents of the box and thought that this looked like one of the best boxes they have ever done.  So I decided to order one.

Just look at the amazing box!

So you may have noticed there are only four products shown above.  That’s because my 5th product was missing from the box.  According to my list of products I should have also received a Coola Organic facial sunscreen.  I’ve emailed Glossybox to let them know I’m missing a product and hopefully it will be with me soon.

Infecto Pure Coconut Refreshing Dry Shampoo

I don’t actually use dry shampoo at the moment but have been meaning to give it a try.  I also love the smell of coconut so I was really pleased to receive this.

Full size product - 150ml’s worth £2.49

Alterna Haircare Bamboo Style Boho Waves Tousled Texture Mist

I’ve been wanting to try a sea salt spray or similar product so again I was pleased to receive this.

Sample size - 25ml’s (full size 125ml’s for £23.00)

Ciate Paint Pot

This was one of the product’s I was really hoping I’d receive.  I’ve never tried a Ciate nail varnish before so I’m looking forward to seeing what it’s like.  I received The Gossip which is a gorgeous peachy coral shade, perfect for summer.

Full size product - 13.5ml’s worth £9.00

Anatomicals Spray Misty for me facial spritz

>I noticed that the majority of boxes include this item so I was expecting to receive this, but unfortunately I can’t use it.  This is obviously the perfect product for the heatwave we’re having at the moment but it contains lavender which I’m allergic to (I also can’t stand the smell of lavender).  I still ordered the box despite knowing I was likely to receive this because I thought the other products looked good enough to risk it and my mum will appreciate this.

Full size product - 100ml’s worth £6.00

So I received three full size products which I’m really pleased about.  I’m not sure what size the sunscreen is but I would imagine this will be a sample size.  I think this is the first Glossybox where I would have been happy to receive any of the products available (apart from the facial spray as I’ve explained above) and I did receive the product I wanted the most (the nail varnish).

So, overlooking that one of my products has gone AWOL, I’m really pleased with this box!

Bourjois 3 for 2 and free sunglasses

I thought I’d do a quick post to let you know that Boots currently have a very good offer on Bourjois.  The Boots buy one get one half price offer has now finished but they have replaced this with 3 for 2 across several brands (but not all of them).

With regards to Bourjois, not only are they offering 3 for 2 but on top of this you also get a free pair of sunglasses in their own little zip up case.

I was just having a little browse round Boots while waiting for my boyfriend (dangerous I know!) when their new Laser Toppings caught my eye.  I couldn’t decide between Aqua Purple and Blue Neon so I thought while the offers on why not get both and also pick up one of the new cream blushes that I’ve been dying to try.  My first ever cream blush!  Reviews for each product (apart from the sunglasses) to follow.

So if you’ve had you eye on a few Bourjois products why not get down to Boots and take advantage of the offer.

Revlon Beauty Booth

At the end of last week I noticed that Revlon are running a new competition based around what they have called the Revlon Beauty Booth, in association with Britain & Ireland’s Next Top Model.
Each week on the Beauty Booth they’ll release a new episode which shows you how to create a particular beauty look.  If you enter your details you could be one of 100 lucky winners who’ll receive a must have product from the look.
This weeks video is Splash Proof Glamour and this weeks must have product is the Colorburst Lip Butter in Sugar Frosting.  The next episode will be released on 18th July and the final one will be released on the 5th September.
They’re already on episode 4 but there’s still plenty of weeks remaining to check out the tutorial videos and try and get your hands on one of Revlon’s top products.

Maybelline Colorsensational Popsticks - Pink Lollipop

This is another one of the products from my #bootscamp goody bag (details here).  I have to admit that I’m totally confused by this product and I’m not entirely sure what it’s actually trying to be!

This has gorgeous neon pink packaging which has a kind of flourescent effect to it and has a silver reflective reflect section on the top end that can be used as a (albeit very small) mirror.  When you open this up you’re greated by an amazing neon pink shimmery bullet which the picture above doesn’t do justice to.  This also smells absolutely incredible with a gorgeous fruity scent.

However, athestics aside, you may have noticed that I haven’t included any kind of swatch for this product and the reason for this is that it would be completely pointless.  When applied (on my hand or on my lips)  I can’t even see it by eye, so there’s no way I’d be able to get my camera to show anything.

So this is why I’m confused as to exactly what this product is supposed to be.  I haven’t been able to find these on the Boots website but I have found them on Superdrug’s, where they are under lipsticks.  The blurb on the Superdrug website reads:

‘Juicy, sheer shades from our fruit-coloured, high-clarity pigments. Slicker shine, more luscious feel, only from our crystal clear gloss stick.  Available in 5 shades’

The shade I have (Pink Lollipop) is obviously very light but there are darker shades available so some of these may show up better.  However, this is definitely not a lipstick; it’s much closer to a traditional stick lip balm.  This does feel nice when applied, but I wouldn’t say there is any noticable shine, in fact it doesn’t look like I’ve applied anything to my lips at all.

I love the funky packaging and bullet (and the amazing smell), but these are the only things that are colorsensational about this product (obviously not the smell).  There’s no way of using this as a lipstick and I think in the future I’ll just be using this as a balm or maybe as a base for other lipsticks.

Glamour Magazine & Balance Me

I’m sure you’re all aware by now that August’s issue of Glamour has been released this week and that each magazine includes a free gift of one of four mini Balance Me products.

I’ve only tried a couple of Balance Me products but of the ones I’ve tried I’ve loved them so I knew I wanted to try and pick up one of each if possible.  Knowing that some of Balance Me’s products contain lavender I checked the ingredients beforehand and found that one did contain lavender, so that narrowed it down to three products.

In my experience, if a magazine offers more than type of free gift with the same issue I’ll usually have to visit different shops if I want to pick up more than one copy with different gifts on.  However, last Friday I was shopping in Sainsburys with my mum when I noticed this issue was already on the shelves (3 days early!) AND I managed to get three issues with the different products I wanted!  Even better as it was mum who was doing the shopping she paid for them as well (aren’t mum’s amazing!).

So I picked up the Moisture-Rich Face Cream, Pure Skin Face Wash and the limited edition Shine on Tinted Lip Salve.  The face cream and face wash will go to the back of a backlogue of those types of products waiting to be used so reviews for these won’t come for a while.  However, I already have a few hundred around 10 different lip balms on the go so I will start the lip salve and a review will follow shortly.

Have you picked up August’s Glamour Magazine and what gift(s) did you get?

No7 BB Lips - Blush Coral

This is one of the items I received in my goody bag from the #bootscamp Twitter party.

We’ve all heard of BB creams by now but I haven’t personally come across BB lips before and to be honest I wasn’t really quite sure what BB lips would mean.  However, after having given this a try I think I understand a little more what they mean by this.

The packaging is really sweet and compact and hardly takes up any room in your bag.  This comes with a slanted plastic applicator as part of the tube.  What I do like about this is that it contains SPF 15 as I often completely forget about sun protecting my lips and obviously you can’t really keep your lips out of the sun unless you never leave the house.  Tomorrow I’m heading to Alton Towers for a friend’s hen doo and as I’m sure you’re all aware it’s set to be a scorcher of a day so I think I’ll be popping this in my bag to make sure my lips are well looked after.

The shade I have is Blush Coral and I think this is a pretty good name for this shade, which is a nice light coral peachy colour.

This is kind of a cross between a tinted lip balm and a lip gloss.  It’s thinner than a lip gloss and although it’s not ‘glossy’ it does have a nice shine to it and it’s not at all sticky.

Now this is a light shade and as I’ve mentioned recently light shades of lip gloss usually don’t show up very well on me (they just look like a clear gloss) but I found that this did have a kind of BB effect on my lips.  Although you can’t see very much colour on me it does appear to even out the skin tone of my lips.  I have a freckle on my bottom lip which you can normally see quite well if I haven’t got lipstick on but the BB balm evened this out and you couldn’t see it.  I may not be explaining this very well, but basically I really liked this (and I’m obviously not the only one as they have a full 5 star rating on the Boots website!).

As a balm/gloss type product this doesn’t last particularly long, maybe a couple of hours, but it’s so compact and easy to apply (no mirror required, for this shade at least) you can just pop this in your pocket or handbag and apply as often as you want.

As I currently have a No7 £3 off makeup voucher I think I may pick another one of these up in either Berry Rose or Belle Pink.

No7 BB Lips are available for £8.50 from Boots.

View Post Micellar Water Blind Trial - The Results

On 13th May I popped up a brief post to let my readers know that I was part of the Micellar Water Blind Trial.  As a brief recap the trial involved 100 beauty fans/experts using 7 anonymous micellar water samples over 14 days.

On 24th May I then posted my thought’s on each of the samples and revealed which of the samples I preferred.

Yesterday Escentuals released the results of the trial including which sample was which, what people thought about each one and which one was the most popular overall.  You can see full details of the results and bigger versions of the screenshots included below on here.

Sample A - Dior Instant Cleansing Water £20.40 for 200ml

This was one of my top three but was actually one of the least favourite across the trial coming in at number 6.  This one felt slightly oily to me which I wasn’t keen on but it was really fresh to use, removed my makeup quickly and easily and only very slightly dried my skin.

Sample B - Nuxe Micellar Cleansing Water with rose petals £14.50 for 200ml

This was the least favourite of the trial and I’m not surprised as it was also one of my least favourite.  I found this had quite a strong scent that I wasn’t keen on, it took a long time to remove my makeup, left my skin feeling quite tight afterwards and I think this actually exaggerated my redness.

Sample C - Caudalie Make-up Remover Cleansing Water £15.00 for 200mlimage

This was personally my favourite of all the samples but it only came 4th overall.  I found this one really fresh and lovely to use.  It removed my makeup quickly and easily and didn’t dry my skin at all but left it feeling soft.

Sample D - Avenue Micellar Lotion Cleanser & Makeup Remover £12.50 for 200ml

This was my least favourite of all the samples however this came in at 5th overall.  This had a nice light scent that I liked and I thought it removed my makeup quite well but my skin started to become sore as I used it and afterwards my skin felt dry, tight and uncomfortable.  I finished the other samples after the trial but I actually threw this one away because it just made my skin too uncomfortable.

Sample E - La Roche-Posay Physiological Micellar Solution £12.00 for 200ml

I found this one just ok, nothing special really but this one came 3rd overall.  It removed my makeup quickly but struggled with my mascara and dried my forehead out a little.

Sample F - Bioderma Sensibio H2O Micelle Solution £9.99 for 250ml

This sample was one of my favourites, was the overall winner of the blind trial and turned out to be the beauty lovers cult favourite Bioderma!  This one was nice to apply, removed my makeup well, didn’t dry my skin and left it feeling quite soft.

Sample G - Vichy Purete Thermale Calming Cleansing Micellar Water £11.25 for 200ml

I found this one ok but it came out 2nd overall.  This removed my makeup quite well although struggled with my mascara and left my skin feeling quite dry and tight.

I found it quite interesting that despite having sensitive skin, the ones that came out as ‘Calming’,’Soothing’ and ‘Sensitive’ were my least favourite and the ones that actually made my skin the most uncomfortable.  It’s also very interesting that despite being a blind trial the beauty bloggers holy grail micellar water Bioderma came out on top.  Bioderma is also the cheapest despite being available in a 250ml bottle whereas the others are available in a 200ml bottle.  So the moral of this story is…..yes, Bioderma really is worth the hype!
