NYC Strip me off base coat

Now I know the name of this may sound a little strange, but that's because it's a peel off base coat. I've wanted to try one for a while now but didn't want to pay a lot for it so I started checking out the budget brands. Unfortunately the first one I bought was apparently faulty as when painted on the nail it would shrink and form pools, which was obviously a complete waste of time! Even though I only paid a couple of pounds for it I did email the brand to complain but I didn't receive any response at all, which to be honest doesn't surprise me from the brand in question.

After reading Sammy's post on her top three budget peel off base coats I decided to try NYC's Strip me off.

As soon as you open the bottle you can tell by the smell that there is at least a little PVA glue in there, it may even just be a little bottle of PVA glue. What I like about this one compared to the first one I tried (apart from the fact that this one actually works!) is that this is white rather than clear, so you can see exactly where you're painting it. However, just like PVA glue it does dry clear. Although to be honest I wouldn't mind if it did dry white as it would help some nail varnishes appear brighter/more opaque. I'd recommend painting a thin layer of this and trying to paint it as evenly as possible as if it goes on uneven you can get a white 'bubble' that takes a lot longer to dry properly.

You then just paint your chosen nail varnish over the top and apply a top coat over the top of that if you wish. To remove it you just get hold of an edge, which isn't usually difficult to do, and peel it off. As this is very easy to remove this obviously does mean that your manicure probably won't last as long as usual. I'd say you might get 24 hours, maybe up to 48 if you're lucky, but if you're using your hands a lot or putting them in water you may get even less time.

The main benefit of a peel off base coat is for glitter nail varnish. I haven't worn glitter nail varnish for years because I can't be bothered with trying to get it off and I can't soak off nail varnish because it burns my skin. But using this means you can just peel it off and it's gone in seconds. As I said it won't last long, but if you're going out somewhere and want glittery nails without the hassle then this is perfect.

One thing that appeals to me is that with this I can swatch multiple nail varnishes on my nails in the same day. I haven't been able to do this in the past because using nail varnish remover multiple times in one day makes my fingers dry and sore. So if I wanted to do a post showing five new nail varnishes on my nails it might take me 2/3 days just to take the photos. With this I can paint one on, take the photos, whip it off and move on to the next one.

The NYC Strip me off base coat is just £2.99 and is available from Superdrug.

Would you use a peel off base coat?

    1. Yes if you don't realise this is intended for use under hard to remove nail varnish then it would appear a little pointless!

    1. I really wanted to try the OPI version as I'm a big fan of their products but I didn't really want to pay that much for it so thought I'd try out a budget version x

  4. I love peeling off all nail varnish so I think if I bought a peel base coat I wouldn't keep it on! Sounds perfect for nail swatches though, I'd never think of that! Sounds like the first brand you tried is a bit pants, doesn't matter what someone has spent customer service is so important!

    1. I have to stop myself peeling off my nail varnish as soon as it starts chipping so this is right up my street! I'm not a fan of the first brand I tried at all, their customer service and conduct on social media is shocking x
