My first products from The Ordinary

The Ordinary is one of the latest brands bought to us by Deciem, whose other brands include Niod, Hylamide and Fountain. The aim of The Ordinary is to cut out the fancy packaging and names and offer high quality skincare products that just do the job, with a budget price point. As with all Deciem brands these products are free from parabens, sulphates, mineral oil and all the other things you might want to avoid in your skincare.

At first glance The Ordinary can appear quite a scary brand due to the very clinical names of the products. But these are designed to be straight to the point, telling you exactly what the product consists of and is for, if you know what you're looking for. Don't worry though, if you know what you want but not what the clinical name for it would be the product descriptions tell you exactly what each product should be used for. You can of course also turn to Twitter for advice from people who will have already tried the product you're looking for.

Products from The Ordinary

Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 - 'the Hydralauron one'

As you may be aware hyaluronic acid is a pretty amazing ingredient when it comes to dry or dehydrated skin as it attracts 1000 times its own weight in water. The key with hyaluronic acid is apparently the size of the molecule used; many products use too large a molecule, meaning this can't be absorbed by the skin and it instead sits on the surface drawing moisture out of the skin. The Hyaluronic acid from the Ordinary contains different size molecules for absorption through different layers of the skin. B5 has also been added to enhance hydration on the surface of the skin.

You can't tell from this picture but this one is actually almost empty now. I'm not quite sure exactly how long I've had these now, but I do tend to use this one twice a day every day. I will be repurchasing this one at some point but probably not just yet as I have other serum type products I really should use up/try first. I have loved using this product though and am itching to repurchase it. Although my skin does become a little more normal in the summer I do suffer with bad dehydration and dryness the rest of the year and this product is perfect for me.

High-Spreadability Fluid Primer  - 'the POREfessional one'

The products I really wanted to try were the Hyalauronic Acid and the Advanced Retinoid, but as just those two products meant I needed to pay for postage I decided to order another product to qualify for free postage. I'd much rather pay another few pounds on top of what I'd have paid for postage to get another product instead.

Benefits POREfessional is I believe one of their top selling products and one of the UKs favourite primers, but I've never been a fan. I always found that it didn't spread very well and just disappeared into my skin where I first applied it, so I was curious about a high-spreadability primer.

Unfortunately when I first opened this product I quickly realised there was something wrong with the lid as it doesn't screw down properly on one side. At first it wasn't too much of a problem, but I certainly wasn't confident to try and travel with it incase it leaked. At this point I contacted Beauty Bay about the lid and was offered a full refund if I returned the product or a 50% refund if I was happy to keep it. As the product was only £5.50 anyway I was happy to go for the latter, but I'm now regretting this. The lid now no longer fits at all and either pops up straight away or does it at some point between uses. The product, which was very fluid when I first received it (to the point where it tended to drip off the pipette) is rapidly thickening up because air is getting to it and it's becoming a bit unusable.

Despite the issues with the bottle I do like the product. It is a silicone based primer but unlike others I've tried it spreads really well and leaves your skin feeling soft and smooth and make-up glides over it meaning I tend to use a little less.

The Ordinary Advance Retinoid 2%

Advanced Retinoid 2% - 'the Luna Sleeping Night oil one'

I'm lucky that my skin is ageing well and my mum looks much younger than she actually is, so things are looking good for me. So much so I didn't even start using any skincare until I was approaching my 30s and my oily skin switched to very dry. But now I've hit my mid-30s I thought it was probably time to start introducing some anti-ageing skincare into my routine.

I have sensitive skin and am aware that retinol can be irritating, so I was a little cautious about trying it, but I needn't have worried. I won't pretend I understand what it says about this product on the The Ordinary website but the retinol product I chose combines two types of retinol that avoid irritation and apparently work better.

I took it slowly introducing this into my routine and to begin with used it every third night to try and avoid overwhelming and irritating my skin. I haven't had any problems with it at all and did move this up to every other night up until the really hot weather arrived. Sun protection should be used every day when using retinol products so I wasn't sure if it was a bad idea to use it when it was so sunny. As I said I haven't had any problems at all with using this and it has done great things for my skin. My skin just generally looks better when I use it and most noticeably my pigmentation issues have improved.

I am so impressed with these products and think they are pretty amazing considering their price point, with prices ranging from around £4 up to about £10. The next products I have my eye on include the Glycolic Acid 7% Toning solution 'the Glow Tonic one', Salicylic Acid 2% solution 'the Effaclar Duo + one' and Caffeine Solution 5% + EGCG 'the one where I've run out of comparisons'. I'm also very curious to try their serum foundation to see if it's anything like my beloved YSL Fusion Ink foundation.

  1. I've loved the few products I have tried so far from The Ordinary. Such a budget friendly brand & they don't skimp on the good ingredients. I am loving the sound of that Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5. I can highly recommend the Caffeine Solution - its fantastic for combating puffy, dark eye bags!
